June 2015 Hurricane Readiness By Jason Baker, Pine Knoll Shores Fire Chief Hurricane season is upon us again, and it is time to go over some of the lessons learned from past storms here in Pine Knoll Shores. While the National Weather Service is saying that this will be a “slow” year for hurricanes, it only takes one storm to devastate a coast line. Now is the time to make your hurricane preparations; don’t wait until a storm is approaching to take action. Below are some guidelines and reminders. First, gather all of your important paperwork: insurance documents (property, life and health), social security cards and basic bank records. Should the worst occur and you incur damage to your house or property, you will have the necessary paperwork to begin the recovery process. Make sure everything is current and up to date. It is a good idea to place this paperwork in waterproof packaging in a backpack and keep it in a safe place where you can easily find it and take it with you should you evacuate. Be sure you have your hurricane re-entry pass. If you do not have one, please come to the Public Safety Building and speak to Natalie Gibble, me or any of the firefighters to have one issued to you. You must have this pass to return to the island afl;er an evacuation. As a storm approaches, be sure you have enough food for 96 hours. Stock up on nonperishable food items and water, and don’t forget supplies for your pets: Place these foods in a box or crate in a safe place. Check your supply of medications. Be sure that you have adequate supplies of prescription medications to last if you are evacuated or are unable to get to the pharmacy for a few days. This, too, should be stored in a safe, dry place. (Continued on page 4) 2014 Water QuaUty Report Available The 2014 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report is now available. It can be viewed on the town’s website at townofpks.com by clicking the “Resources” tab and choosing “Document Library.” Once on the Document Library page, scroll down to the bottom of the Folders list to “Water Quality Reports.” In addition, printed copies of the report may be picked up at town hall or at the Public Safety Building. Questions about the report can be directed to Water System Operator Sonny Cunningham at 723-0055. Ordinance Reminders for Summer By Ryan Thompson, Pine Knoll Shores Chief of Police With summer knocking on our door, it’s a great time to remember some very important ordinances that keep our beautiful beaches safe and clean. • Driving on the beach is prohibited except by emergency response vehicles. In addition, it is very important that the emergency vehicle beach access at the Iron Steamer and Knollwood Drive beach areas remain unblocked. These are our only two routes to enter the beach strand with a vehicle in Pine Knoll Shores in the event of an emergency. • Any type of fire on the beach is prohibited due to the concern of a fire in the dunes. • Dogs are welcome on our beaches but must be kept on a leash at all times. In addition, it is essential that dog owners pick up waste left by their pets and dispose of it in an appropriate receptacle. Simply covering up waste with sand is not acceptable. • Alcohol is permitted on the beach, but any type of glass botde is prohibited. • Any holes that are dug on the beach must be filled in. This is for the safety of first responders in the event they are responding to an emergency on the beach strand and for others who may be walking on the beach. The police department has received some complaints about pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists not sharing the road on town streets and Highway 58. It is important to remember that everyone has a right to walk, run, bike and drive with a reasonable expectation of safety and courtesy If you are walking, running or bicycling, please stay as near to the edge of the roadway as possible to give passing motorists the room that they need. In addition, if you are walking a dog, curb the animal so that cars may pass . without endangering your pet. Similarly, if you are driving, please slow down when you see pedestrians and bicyclists and pass them in a safe manner. I would also like to remind drivers that they are required by law to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. As you travel down Highway 58, approach crosswalks with caution and a careful eye out for pedestrians. Pedestrians are asked to look both ways before entering a crosswalk to ensure that there is enough time to safely cross the road before oncoming traffic reaches your location. There have been some close calls but fortunately no injuries. We need to work together with courtesy and common sense to ensure this continues to be the case.
